Discount Surgeries: A Crazy Way to ‘Save’ Money

Ah, Groupon. To most, it symobolises endless, useless frugality. Would you like to head to Beirut/Bradford/Bratislava in November for two nights in a B&B? No, not even the teeniest bit – but at 75% off, most of us are tempted. And let’s not forget teeth whitening treatments. At 300 bazillion per cent off, you’d be crazy not to buy that coupon. What most of us don’t think of when Groupon pops up in our inboxes (spam folders?) is cosmetic surgery. Recent offers, however, have included 58% off for Otoplasty or ear correction for one ear or both, saving you £2,105, and similar offers including nose jobs. Sounds like a bargain, right? But it also sounds like a horrible, terrible and completely misguided idea.

Discount surgery: costly at half the price

Think of it: you’ve perhaps always despised your ears – the lobes are sideways, or your pinna is off centre maybe – and here is your chance for that discount surgery/ absolute godsend! Chances like these only come around maybe never! There’s just one major problem with your flawless plan however: cosmetic surgery is a serious undertaking. Surgery is painful, and can involve a lot of recovery time. It is completely irresponsible to offer a service such as cosmetic surgery online, without a consultation with a doctor, and even more irresponsible to sign up for the same.

Similarly, more and more cases of Body Dysmorphic Disorder are being diagnosed daily. Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a psychological disorder in which the affected person is excessively preoccupied by or anxious about a perceived defect in his or her physical features. Research has shown that sufferers from the disorder should be treated with therapy, and not with an endless stream of fruitless surgeries. Links with manic depression have also been proven with BDD. This serious disorder cannot be diagnosed online, and is not a condition of the Groupon discount voucher.

For these reasons, it is unwise – actually, it’s bloody stupid – to purchase discount surgeries online. Research the procedure you feel you need or would like, research a clinic and practitioner, seek a consultation with a trained and accredited doctor, and leave Groupon for nail treatments and trips to Alton Towers.

  1. Hi. I am a consultant Doctor in cosmetic Medicine and I could not have written a better article than this. I am a member of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors. We take our obligation to patients very seriously.

Personally I also lecture on Body Dysmorphic Disorder and I agree that this is on the increase it is serious and needs psychotherapy. It is often found in those who also suffer from OCD. If you want any cosmetic procedure should it be injectable eg Botulinum Toxin or fillers or more extensive surgery see a properly qualified Docotor.

I am appalled by the increase in Groupon vouchers for serious cosmetic procedures. I have seen the results of Botched procedures from underqualified personnell ( some even tanning shop owners with NO proper medical training!). This is your body: maybe even your life. Can you really afford 2 lives for 1?
